I used to not think that the design process was important in creating a successful design. The extent to which I was wrong still baffles me to this day. I've learnt throughout high school that following a set, but manipulatable process helps to eventually get you to the best destination possible.
In class, we followed a design process to design a wallet for someone else in the class. It was a kind of process I had not much experience with, and I found especially the interview process very interesting. Learning how to listen to answers, and ask the right questions, posed to be harder than I first thought it would be. I enjoyed asking interview questions, and was shocked at how many more ideas I had when given boundaries and creating a brief for my design. I used to think that briefs limited my creativity and options, but in reality they broaden them.
My "client" was someone who was always on the go. They liked things to be practical, and often doesn't carry lots around with her. Instantly I was able to eliminate a few possibilities of the design (e.g a huge flamboyant, heavy wallet). Slowly as the questions became more specific and more personal, I was able to really understand her as a person, and from there, many ideas came into mind. Following the process is very important, and I will sure be using the interview process learnt in this exercise in the future. It was also very helpful to receive feedback on my initial designs from her, so that I didn't spend time working on a design that further down the line, would be rejected anyway. The design process is very important, and even though this was only a small portion of it, I found it extremely useful and a tool that I will further use.
