I'd say my favourite tool for design is a simple sketchbook. I am a very visual learner, I enjoy sketching and playing with designs on paper. It helps me to think quickly, and rapidly generate ideas without being slowed down by, for example, a more digital method. My mind seems to flow much better when I have a pen on paper, but in the future I would like to be more fluent in Adobe Ai and also Ps. I have used illustrator throughout high school, but never seemed to quite become good at it. I usually opted to draw things by hand and then scan them through. I am interested in learning to use illustrator more, so that if I have a design that needs to be copy and pasted and further manipulated, I can do it with much less effort than if I had to draw everything out by hand.
Other tools I love to use is a sewing machine. I think my love of sewing from when I was a child, really progressed and stayed with me as I kept growing up. I used to make soft toys, little plushies and pencil cases at a young age. The day that I got my first sewing machine was undoubtedly one of the most exciting days for me. I found that there were so many new options of things I could create with this machine. I enjoy the simplicity of the machine, and how easy it was to use from the get go. I as a 10 year old, didn't find myself looking at the instruction manual very often, so the design of this machine was clearly logical. The "Brother GS2510 Home sewing machine" is the model I have, and the functionality of this machine is truly very impressive. The threading of the machine is only a few short steps, and can be done in a matter of seconds. It has features like overlocking (not the exact type that is industrially used, but good enough for small projects) and a 4-step button hole option. It can also be converted to a free-arm machine, if needed to sew things like cuffs.
The reason I love this tool so much, is because it saves time and makes rapid prototyping very easy. Theres no need to spend time sewing by hand or having to spend hours and hours to see how something is going to look. By grabbing a bit of calico fabric, and heading to this machine, an initial prototype can be created in minutes.
I want to learn how to use a vinyl cutter in the future, it is a tool that really interests me and I hope that I can have access to one soon. Graphic design in small things like decorative stickers, is something that is a personal favourite for home projects.
